What is a Free Beta Version?

The Lesson Plans and Bible lessons are a work in progress I am creating for my own children. They are considered a FREE Beta version. When a new product is created or upgraded, there are several stages in development before the product can be sold in the commercial marketplace. A beta version is the name for the second stage in which it is released for free or a reduced price to a group of users.

These Lesson Plans are NOT edited. You may find a typos or mistakes. Please let us know if you find errors in a polite email. As long as you can put up with some typos and occasional late postings they will remain free. If I need to hire editors or writers to stay on schedule there will be a small fee.

Following the Lesson Plan Schedule

Don’t feel you have to follow the lessons exactly as planned. Pray and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you on the path God has for your family.

The lessons are only suggestions based on how I teach my children. I am passing them on to you, like a recipe. Try them, play with them, add and subtract different resources and activities until the plans work for your family.

History and Science unit studies alternate. You stay in one unit until complete ( 2-4 weeks).

The most important part of your planning is giving your schedule to God.

Day and night belong to God (Psalm 74:16). When you submit your ways to God, He promises to direct your paths. He will lead you. This is a wonderful opportunity for spiritual growth for your entire family. As you lean on Him, I promise that you will see obvious events in your schedule that you will know came directly from God. Marvelous things happen when you wait on Him!

Step 1: Excite

This week we look at the period from leaving Egypt (Ex 13:17) to the parting of the Red Sea (14:31).

Toward the Red Sea (13:17-18)

Joseph’s bones (13:19)

Divine guidance (13:20-22)

God’s plan (14:1-4)

Pharaoh pursues (14:5-9)

Israel laments (14:10-14)

God’s command (14:15-18)

Darkness stops Pharaoh (14:19-20)

A path through the sea (14:21-31)

Israel saved (14:21-22)

Egypt destroyed (14:23-31)

The Bible states when the Hebrews left Egypt there were 600,000 fighting men. Scholars calculate that this would mean at least 2.5 million Israelites, including women, children, priests and the elderly. There was also cattle and animals.

They left Egypt by following God.

And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness. And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.” Exodus 13:20-22

The Hebrews followed God via the cloud and fire. Once they had decided to obey and walk forward, they not only had light in front to guide the way, but thick cloud behind them to keep the enemy at bay!Brainstorm and discuss how do we follow God today?

Step 2: Examine

Read Exodus 13:17 to 14:31. The Hebrews followed a cloud by day, the fire by night. (See 1 Kings 8:10–11 for a similar manifestation of God’s presence.)

Opening up Exodus comments on Exodus 14:

Suddenly Pharoah awakens to the realization of what has happened—Israel has left Egypt! How could they have allowed this to happen? Pharaoh marshals his troops and pursues Israel with hardened heart in order to prevent them escaping.
This chapter juxtaposes God’s sovereign judgement on Pharaoh (‘I will harden Pharaoh’s heart’—14:4) with Pharaoh’s own wilful rebellion. For God’s people, however, the danger soon becomes apparent, as they find themselves trapped between ‘the devil and the deep Red Sea’, between Pharaoh’s armies and the Red Sea.

The Israelites are quick to cry out to Moses, and even against Moses. Has he led them out of Egypt only to have them perish in the wilderness? Would it not have been better for them simply to perish where they were, than fill them with false hopes which would be dashed so quickly?
Moses knows, however, that the people need to be reminded of the all-powerful nature of the God who keeps his promises. There are times for moving, and there are times for standing still. Even although the best forces of Pharaoh’s army are closing in on them from behind, Moses tells them that this is a time to ‘stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD’ (14:13), a time to realize that God would fight for them (14:14).

Once again the word of Moses is authenticated with a display of awesome, divine power, as he raises his staff over the waters of the river, in response to the command of God. The people witness the diverging of the waters, as God makes a path through the sea which will allow his people to cross over. This is a second ‘passover’ experience, as they traverse the wide river, with God’s presence standing ‘between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel’ (14:20), hiding his people and protecting them from their enemies.

Not only does Israel manage to cross on dry ground, but the Egyptians, who drive their chariots along the dry path through the Red Sea, suddenly find themselves submerged beneath the waves of the sea as God brings the wall of water crashing back down into its course. As the sun rises, the Egyptians have either perished or returned. The problem has been taken away. God has been true to his promise.

Throughout the narrative, the reason for this display of power is evident. ‘I will get glory over Pharaoh,’ says God in 14:4, 17 and 18. The greater glory belongs to Jehovah, who fights on behalf of his people. In turn, they have become witnesses of his power, which in turn has confirmed their faith in God and their trust in his spokesmen, Moses and Aaron (14:31).

Optional: Read Be Delivered (Exodus): Finding Freedom by Following God (Wiersbe Commentary) Chapter 4.

Step 3: Expand

Complete at least 1 activity.

Activity 1. Make a list.
Make a list of at least five ways we follow God today.

Activity 2. Copy Work
Use the bullet list at the beginning of this lesson to create an outline.

Activity 3. Study and Discuss
The presence of God in fire and cloud is an important theme of the Book of Exodus. Study the following references: Numbers 14:14, Deuteronomy 31:15, Nehemiah 9:12, 19, Psalm 99:7. Look up the following references to the presence of God with his people: Matthew 28:20, 2 Timothy 4:17, Hebrews 13:5. What can we conclude from these references about God’s nearness to his people? (Opening up Exodus).

Activity 4. Make a Lapbook booklet.

Step 1: Excite

Review this outline of Exodus 14 from The Outline Bible:

A. Phase one: Israel at the Red Sea (Ex. 14:1–18)

1. The decision of Pharaoh: Follow up! (Ex. 14:1–9): Regretting his decision to free Israel, Pharaoh orders the Egyptian army, including 600 chariots, to capture the Israelites by the Red Sea.
2. The despair of the people: Give up! (Ex. 14:10–12): In great fear and anger the Israelites cry out to Moses, “Our Egyptian slavery was far better than dying out here in the wilderness!”
3. The declaration of Moses: Look up! (Ex. 14:13–14): Moses reassures them, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand where you are and watch the LORD rescue you.”
4. The decree of God: Lift up! (Ex. 14:15–18): Moses is told to raise his staff over the Red Sea, dividing the waters and allowing Israel to walk across on dry ground.

B. Phase two: Israel crosses the Red Sea (Ex. 14:19–15:21)

1. The protecting (Ex. 14:19–20): The pillar of cloud moves between the Egyptians and the Israelites. At night it becomes a pillar of fire once again, resulting in darkness for the Egyptians but glorious light for the Israelites.
2. The parting (Ex. 14:21–22): A strong east wind blows and parts the Red Sea, forming walls of water on each side.
3. The perishing (Ex. 14:23–31): Attempting to pursue the Israelites across the dry path, the Egyptians drown when Moses lifts his hand, causing the waters to collapse on them.
4. The praising (Ex. 15:1–21): A great victory celebration is held on the eastern banks of the Red Sea. Moses and his sister, Miriam, lead the nation in singing, music, and dancing

Look at a map of the Exodus. Find where the Hebrews crossed the Red Sea.

Step 2: Examine

Read Exodus chapter 14.

The Passover illustrates the Christian’s salvation through the blood of the Lamb, but there is more to the Christian life than being saved from judgment. Israel’s experiences in their journey from Egypt to Canaan are pictures of the battles and blessings of the Christian life.

God’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt pictures His mercy in delivering all His people from bondage. In a mighty display of His power He freed Israel even though they were worried and afraid. the Jews were walking by sight, not by faith; for when they saw the Egyptian army coming, they gave up in despair and cried out in fear.

Passover night was an end to slavery, but a beginning of life with God. While the people of Israel were always to remember that “the Lord brought [them] out of it” (Ex. 13:3), they were not to remember Egypt! They were not to look back, but to move out immediately on their journey to the Promised Land. (Richards, L., The Teacher’s Commentary)

Walking through the Red Sea is a picture of God our baptism into Christ. Just as Israel came up on the other side of the Red Sea and saw what had become of their enemies, so we are called to see what God has done through our old man’s death and resurrection with Christ.

Optional: Read Be Delivered Chapter 5 Section 2. Trusting the Lord (Ex. 14:1–31).

Step 3: Expand

Complete at least 1 activity.

Activity 1. Discuss
Read Hebrews 11:29 about the faith of Moses in connection with the crossing of the Red Sea. The Jews were walking by sight, not by faith; for when they saw the Egyptian army coming, they gave up in despair and cried out in fear. Discuss situations where you can walk by faith, not sight, today. How does faith help us in different circumstances?

Activity 2. Copy Work
Copy the outline in section 1 or write a new outline in your own words.

Activity 3. Study and Discuss
Read Exodus 13:1–16 again, and think about the relationship between redemption and consecration. How is this theme developed in Isaiah 62:12, Ephesians 1:3–7, 1 Peter 1:13–18? (Opening up Exodus).

A great victory celebration is held on the eastern banks of the Red Sea. Moses and his sister, Miriam, lead the nation in singing, music, and dancing. Deliverance always leads to praise! God’s people praise him because he has redeemed them! Can you imagine how grateful they were?

Discuss and make a list of ways you praise God. Include at least 5 ways.

Read Exodus 15:1-21.

These key elements about God in this Psalm are:

He is strong has become Israel’s salvation (15:2).

He is a warrior (15:3).

He is incomparable (15:11).

He would plant Israel in his inheritance (15:17).

He is an eternal king (15:18).

Activity 2. Study and Discuss
There are other passages of Scripture that speak about God fighting on behalf of his people. Look, for example, at 2 Kings 6:17, Nehemiah 4:20, 1 John 4:4, Revelation 17:14. How does this help us to understand God? Or to understand the situation of his people in this world?
