What a Difference Hair Makes!

Rocky our Great Pyrenees was shaved today. Amazing difference.  He went from 98 pounds to 92 pounds (wish a haircut would do that for me).

How adorable! I wish I could lose that much weight with a haircut, too! The boys sure are sprouting up – turning into young men. 🙂

Sorry, I just stumbled onto your page through a google search of the Pyr. We own a Pyr and love him to death.

I’m not sure where you are located but I’m assuming you’re somewhere down south with hot weather. The Pyr’s heavy double coat can actually help insulate him from the heat as well as the cold.

It might take a long time for his hair to grow back properly because they have a dense undercoat. The undercoat will grow out at the same time as the outer guard hairs and it might twist up and mat more easily and actually require more work than a Pyr with a full grown coat.

I’m from Illinois and I shave my great pyrenees every year in the begining of march while its still cool outside. She is an inside dog. while I do not shave her to the skin I shave very close. I use a 5. Her coat grows back wonderfully. by the end of the summer she has a full coat. Just wanted to put in my input. She is 7 by the way. So she is no pup.
If anyone reading this owns a great pyrenees and are thinking about shaving its coat. I would say go for it IF its an inside dog and also I dont recommend leaving him in the sun for any amount of time. Make sure he has shade his skin can burn if its a close shave and he can overheat the coat does keep him cool.
my girl has a working coat so its not terribly long ao I have no problems wuwith mats ever.
      Good luck!

I agree with Andrea, we also own a Pyr mix and have been advised not to shave, please use sunscreen for a few weeks they can get a terrible burn:(

As the owner of 2 Pyrs, I understand why you want to trim down your dog. However, going so short is not a good thing. Next time, ask for a “snap cut.” This isn’t a shave, but trims the hair down to a very manageable length, without shaving. Or, if you trim yourself, just use a comb on your trimmer, to the length desired. Be sure to wash him and let him dry first.

Beautiful dog and some handsome kiddies too.
