15 Alternative Uses for Olive Oil

The sweet, golden fluid from olives is considered the purest of oils. It is the oil used to anoint the kings in Israel, light the Shabbat lamps, and during the Hanukkah celebration.

Most Americans use it for salad dressing, cooking, or a bread dip . Olive oil has many health benefits:

  • Reduces plaque formation in the heart/blood vessels
  • Reduces cancer risks (protects cells from carcinogens)
  • Lowers blood sugar levels (lower triglyceride levels)
  • Keeps tissues fluid
  • Helps control weight

Besides its uses in the kitchen, here are some household and beauty uses.

  1. Herb preserver (chives, sage, basil, etc. can be preserved in oil. Chop and blend herbs with enough oil to make a paste and store in the refrigerator for up to a month or in the freezer for up to six months.)
  2. Furniture polish (place a few drops on a rag.)
  3. Shaving cream

  5. Makeup Remover
  6. Hair conditioner (put a small drop in palm, then rub both hands together and apply it to dry hair.)
  7. Diaper ointment (prevents diaper rashes)
  8. Manicure solution (moisturize cuticles with few teaspoons in water).
  9. Lip balm
  10. Foot softener
  11. Leather conditioner
  12. Hairball reducer (mix a teaspoon with a can of cat food )
  13. Zipper lubricant (apply with a cotton swab to get a zipper unstuck.)
  14. Öl 2Bath oil (a few teaspoons in the bath water)
  15. Hinge lubricant  (apply a small dab to a cloth and wipe the tops of hinges allowing a bit of the oil to run down the side)

Question: the other day I had an ear ache, I went to Walmart to buy anything that would help, in the isle with all the ear products was seet Oil olive oil, I figured this was put in my ear for the pain, as I read the bottle it say to take 1 tsp, full, is this stuff to drink or put in your ear???

  7. Great post Robin! Another use for Olive oil is to treat psoriasis on the scalp. Rub in well to the scalp, and sleep overnight with it in. Then the next morning, comb the scalp well to loosen dried on stuff, and wash. Works wonders!

    @Delores: best treatment for earaches is vodka. I have been using it since I was a small child and the doctor told my mother to use it. A few drops twice a day for a couple days and the infection will be gone.
