What is RSS? Can it Make My Life Easier?

This is part of a series of articles on how homeschoolers can Utilize the Internet.

Do you try to keep up with more than one blog? I do. I enjoy several blogs but I don’t have the time to jump around to all of them. So I use an RSS reader.

RSS is Rich Site Summary. Most news-related sites, weblogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

Each day, I open my RSS reader and browse dozens of blogs by category: Bible Studies, Homeschooling, Hebrew Roots, Writing, Homemaking, Organization, etc., then choose the articles I want to read. It’s great!

While planning on how to explain how RSS works, I found this great little video that explains it really well. Watch the video then read below.

Feed readers are intended to make it easier for users to gather and sift through large amounts of information. I love my RSS feeder. It has made my life much easier. I no longer need to jump from site to site for most of my daily reads and research. Everything comes to me. And I don’t have to give my name. I can subscribe anonymously.

What a Feed Looks Like

As explained in the video:

  1. You need a feed reader or feed aggregator to read the feeds (a bunch of articles on a topic). See list of readers below.
  2. Go to your favorite blogs and/or news sites and subscribe to RSS feeds.

If I hadn’t found out about RSS readers early in my blogging life… I would have quit blogging long ago! I simply don’t have time to link into each site.

Thank you for explaining this. I never took the time to look more into it because I was a bit intimidated by it. LOL!
