Father requires three things. That we:

  1. act justly – be fair in dealings with others
  2. love mercy and kindness – meet others needs
  3. walk humbly with . . . God – fellowship with Him, without arrogance

Yes, it is that simple! If the three ingredients above are active in your life  you will produce the fruit of the spirit in your life: love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness and self control.

Don’t misunderstand, these three requirements are  not intended as a way of salvation, but as the way the saved are to walk. We can have relationship with God because of His son’s sacrifice. That relationship lifts our burdens as God frees, guides, protects, and teaches us because He is our Father and loves us.

We do not produce fruit of the spirit by attempting to harness it. It is produced in us when we allow His Spirit to harness us. I don’t want you to miss these words so I scrapped them:

Time to Examine Fruit:

  • Do you respond in anger or resentment or gentleness?
  • Are you experiencing peace or are you uptight and pressured?
  • Are you patient or frustrated and irritated?
  • Do you show kindness or is your attitude “every man for himself”?
  • Are you being faithful or neglecting commitments?
  • Are you living joyously? or are you feeling defeated, depressed, and discouraged?

We all have burdens to carry in this life: broken marriages, problem or prodigal children, painful and abusive parents, financial hardships, poor health, loss of loved ones.

Some of these we cause ourselves because we are all sinners. Some tragic things happen to us because others sin against us.

Whatever state we are in God wants us to be just, kind and humble. Kindness is love in action. The classic example of kindness in Scripture is the Good Samaritan. The ultimate example is Christ.

The Hebrew word for kindness, che’sedh (KHEH-sed) means loving-kindness or loyal love as used in Micah 6:8. This verse gives a summary of what God requires of us.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Colossians 3:12

The Greek word clothe literally means “put on.” Each day we get dressed physically and spiritually before facing the world. We choose to be kind.

“Do Want a Good Day or a Bad Day?

I often ask my children “Do want to have a good day or a bad day? to remind them they choose their actions and attitudes. We choose to be kind by being sensitive to others’ needs. (I love that I now frequently hear my daughter ask my grandchildren the same question!)

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4

Christians Shoot Their Wounded

I am deeply grieved to report that there were times in my life I received more kindness from the unsaved than from fellow Christians. It has been said, “Christians have the only army that shoots their wounded.”

Many times Christians react with harsh judgment – the opposite of kindness.  A huge percentage of Jesus teaching was against religious judgment. God commands us to bear one another’s burdens (not beat one another with their burdens).

If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.” I John 4:20

We should hold Christians up to a higher standard of moral conduct. But we should show mercy, compassion, and kindness when brothers or sisters stumble or fall.

We are to “… reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Tim. 4:20) in loving encouragement. Kindness is expressed in our forgiving others just as we have been forgiven. (Eph 4:32)

Don’t shoot the wounded, someday you might be one.

Kindness Toward Those Who Treat You Unkindly

Grace and kindness always go together. Poet Robert Burns said that the kind heart most resembles God. We should be kind just because God is kind to us.

“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the and the blind can see.”–Mark Twain

The unsaved will treat someone kindly if they like them. Christians should treat every one kindly always in all ways.

But My Family is a Dysfunctional Mess!

It is hardest to show kindness to someone who intentionally hurt you. Hurt people, hurt people.

Joseph’s family was a dysfuctional mess. His brothers sold him into slavery. But Joseph relied on God and God restored his family.

Joseph had the opportunity to retaliate and get even with his brothers for the way they treated him. But he reassured them and spoke kindly to them, even after their father had died (Gen. 50:19 – 21).

How Can We be Kind When Our Flesh Wants to Retaliate?

It is a matter of surrender. Christ becomes more real as we understand Him to be within. He fills our heart, and lives through us. He loves through us. Paul said in Galatians:

I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live, yet not I, but Christ lives in me: and the life I now live, I live by the faith of the Son of God.”

Our continual prayer should be “Less of me, more of You.” We are to be salt and light in this world. Others judge Christianity by our actions.

Kindness is a language. Learn it, share it; it speaks volumes.

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height – to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God Eph. 3:14-19.

Whatever God desires for your life is His best. Humbly walk with Him, and you’ll find it.

  8. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. With faith, I believe he is pleased and this is what is required.

  9. Loving God back is the best gift we can offer. If we love him, we will definitely be at peace with all men and the world will be a better place for all.
