Things My Doctor Didn't tell Me

The American medical system is among the best care the world for treating accidents, but ranks with the lowest  in the world for treatment of disease. We have higher rates of infant mortality, diabetes, heart disease, and other ills than many other developed countries.

This week I received several test results from my primary care doctor (not my nutritionist/chiropractor), with a few suggestions for treatment.

The doctor’s recommendation included several medications that have very serious and debilitating long-term side effects. What the doctor didn’t tell me is that there are several completely safe alternatives that have no side effects.

Symptoms: Throbbing, aching bone pain. Tests: Blood work, X-rays, bone scan.

Diagnosis

  • Osteopenia is a precursor to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time.
  • Treatment Suggested: Bisphosphonates  (Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax, Reclast)  prescription medication for the management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.

What My Doctor Did Not Tell Me About Osteoporosis Drugs

–Sally Fields doesn’t mention these in her Boniva commercials:

  • that long-term use of osteoporosis drugs can actually make bones brittle and more likely to fracture
  • that  the side effects from osteoporosis drugs include: throat pain, chest pain, or difficulty swallowing, ulcers of the esophagus, severe heartburn, severe bone, muscle, or joint pain, jaw or tooth problems, back pain, bronchus, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headaches, infections, weakness, vomiting, high cholesterol, muscle pain, arthritis, dizziness (vertigo), pneumonia, sore throat, bladder infection (urinary tract infection or UTI), constipation, insomnia.

What My Doctor Did Not Tell Me About Alternatives

  • regular exercise and vitamin and mineral supplements can reduce and even reverse loss of bone density.
  • widespread occurrence of Osteopenia in the developed world is related to SAD (standard American diet) and a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Osteoporosis and Osteopenia are almost unknown in parts of the world where diets are primarily fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • to cut back on acid forming foods (meat, fish, dairy, grains, legumes, nuts, soda pop, caffeine) and increase alkaline foods (vegetables, fruit) to increase bone density.
  • a fresh, organic salad each day can improve bone density.
  • dried plums (prunes), onions, and sage can each  improve bone density.
  • the nutrient rich green drinks I recently added to my daily diet  should make a huge improvement  in bone density in the next 12 to 24 months  without prescription medication.

My Advice

  • Pray for wisdom before going to the doctor.
  • Research and compare your doctor’s recommendations with alternative medicine recommendations.
  • Change your diet! The Standard American Diet (SAD) increases the risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, intestinal disorders—just about any illness. Eat more of God’s foods (plant-based: vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc.) and less of man’s foods (processed foods). Cultures that eat the reverse of the standard American diet—low fat, high in complex carbohydrates, plant-based, and high in fiber—have a lower incidence of cancer and coronary artery disease.
  • Drink Green Smoothies – I created the information Green Smoothie Forum for those interested in adding vegetables and fruits into their diet in a delicious and easy way. See What is a Green Smoothie?

Prayer Request

For the last two years, my sister, Charlotte (age 48), has been in and out of the hospital 20 some times battling MRSA (a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to most antibiotics).

I’m doing research to find out what her doctors are not telling her.

The week she was admitted in to the hospital again with pneumonia. They found the port that administers antibiotics into her system was also infected with MRSA and needed to be removed. A lung X-ray revealed a mass. I’d appreciate your prayers.

  1. As always you provide us with excellent information!
Thanks for sharing all these, I hope more people will realize the same about dangerous medications and that there actually are safer alternatives.
We finally got my mother in law to switch out her medication for safer alternatives for osteoporosis..However, she rather listens to her doctor than her son that is a naturopath (my husband)…We got her better with natural remedies for emphysema, and then the doctor convinced her to go back on regular medication and now she just sits there more sick again..Just because the doctor told her it was better even though she knows she feels worse..
People don’t questions the doctors and gladly take the medication suggested instead of looking for safer alternatives.

  2. Another bit of advice, look for a DO instead of an MD. They tend to be more open to not solving every problem with a magic pill.

All pills have side effects. But our doctors are treating us this way cause our society wants it. People go to the doctor with a cold to get antibiotics. A cold is caused by a virus. Antibiotics kill bacteria. A virus is different from bacteria. Antibiotics will not kill a virus. The virus will last 7-10 without treatment. Standard antibiotic treatment is 7-10 days. People assume the antibiotics cured them, when in fact, they could have sat at home, saved their money and been well in the same 7-10 days.

But, we want a magic pill. A quick fix. We are a society of instant gratification. Pills satisfy this. We ask, the doctors give to keep their patients happy and coming back to them.

Did you also know, studies prove many kids are diagnosed ADHD and put on dangerous drugs, when all that needs to be done is simple diet changes. Many kids allergic to red dye are misdiagnosed as ADHD and put on drugs to treat it when all the parents really need to do is read their child’s food labels (my son is allergic to red dye)

Good for you for educating yourself on your diagnosis and treatment options!

  3. Gee Robin, I am not sure why you would not want to use that medication. Surely those 27 side effects would be worth it!

  4. Johanna, that has to be heartbreaking. My moms the same way. I send DVDs and books but she doesn’t listen. She’s on over 20 medications! You can lead a horse to water then just pray he’ll drink.

  5. Ah doctors, they are so much fun. I have noticed more and more that they will just throw meds at the problem rather then trying to figure it out.

I went to the doctor for some illness over the winter and we given high blood pressure pills to help regulate a slightly elevated BP level. I didn’t want to take it. I don’t want to spend my life living on medication like others in my family. My cousin, younger then me came down to visit and said she didn’t have a problem with it, and what’s the big deal.

Against my better judgment I stated the pills. I developed a horrible cough and went to the doctor 3 times for it, spending a ton of money on office visit and prescriptions to help correct the problem. I finally went online to see if I could find anything at all to help.

Found out it was the BP medication, these same doctors had prescribed. Hacking, never ending cough is the number one side effect and they couldn’t be bothered to tell me that. As soon as I stopped taking it, the problem went away.

I think it’s so sad that I can diagnose and treat myself at home and the doctors who make millions just throw pills at me and walk out of the room. Yet they get furious when you diagnose yourself because you know your body best. If you didn’t go to medical school you can’t possibly know what might be wrong.

That’s right, it was strep that I had gone in for that started the whole mess. They couldn’t tell me what was wrong because of course their quick tests showed nothing right? Even though you could visibly see I had strep, I’ve had it before, I’m not stupid. Again, took time after time to figure it out. I finally demanded the long test and they called me a week later, three weeks after it started and told me that I had strep. I was extremely lucky it resolved itself on it’s own.

    Another fun story.
It took my mom 10+ years to be diagnosed with heart disease. According to doctors in three states, she was too young and too female to have it. She is super skinny, 46 year old woman and therefor she must have been making up her numerous symptoms. They all told her she was nuts and couldn’t feel pain in or around her heart.

Not many doctors have bothered to learn that heart disease and other heart related issues are vastly different in women then men. All the studies, tests, and 99% of the medical education are only concerning men. They feel women are exactly like men in that regard, but it’s extremely false and things are not changing quickly enough.

I have a lot of these stories. I am really starting to mistrust doctors.

  6. True wisdom is being informed. Thank you for this article, sometimes when it comes to researching and finding alternatives to your health, people think you should just listen to your doctor.

I have the symptoms of MRSA periodically, meaning outbreaks. I have not had a doctor diagnose me. I also have herpes simplex (cold sores). These both break out when my body is under stress, meaning bad food choices as well as mental. To combat MRSA, I use tea tree oil, garlic oil, and oil of oregano. To combat herpes simplex, I watch my Arginine intake and boost my Lysine. Also watch my body’s acidity.

I studied about body acidity when my son was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Due to his age we could not treat holisticly but his Oncologist lets us use natural methods to counteract the side effects of the meds he takes.

The blessings by our family using holistic ways is my children now know them, have a deeper understanding of how God made the body and are accountable to take care of it. They have also learned not to totally shut out the medical community.

  7. Hi Robin! I’m collecting comments in my head so needed to stop and come and say hello and thank you and wow, this needs to be shouted out on the rooftops! I have to get this info to my Mom because I’ve even heard of jaws disintegrating from these Ca supplements. Have you ever read the book, the Magnesium miracle? I use topical magnesium daily and this is supposed to deliver the Ca that we take in nutritionally better.
But mainly I wanted to say another WOW! I have avoided green drinks for so long because I’ve bought them and hated their taste and there was nothing I could do to make it taste better or at least I would have so much honey in there it wasn’t worth it! LOL.
Its the simple things that turn us 360 sometimes. I have a juicer but was afraid to use it because it would give me too much sugar, BUT it never occurred to me to juice greens. I think juicing greens with fruit is a wonderful idea and just the next thing I need.
I’m seeing a new naturopath Monday and am very excited about it. A new chiropractor and some new resources took over my old ones practice so I’m looking forward to the new wisdom.

Thanks again for all you share. Hugs from DE.
    Love, Joni

  8. Great post! As a doctor (though I’m a SAHM homeschooling my kids now), I sure wish the first recommendation by physicians would be a whole grain, fruit and vegetable diet, plus exercise. Medications have their place, but are sadly overused to mask symptoms caused by the standard American diet and lifestyle.

    Take care,

    Misty

  9. Thanks for the article. I am exactly what you describe – a start up web article and I used a hosted full service solution.

  10. I am so glad to see that I’m not the only one who has become extremely frustrated and mistrusting of doctors. It seems to also be God calling His children to pay more attention to the temple and to take better care of it. It saddens me so much to see loved ones blindly believing everything that people say who have a couple of added letters to their names instead of using common sense, the knowledge available, and the wisdom God will give if we ask. Almost like puppets instead of using their own brains to think for themselves. Hmmm, not too unlike certain religions, and the schooling situation.

There is also a couple of good websites pertaining to raw foods and all kinds of great info, including autism. Bodyecology.com is one, but tread carefully…sometimes the info can stray a little to new age but the rest of the medical(ie holistic) info is valid and very good. Bulkfoodstore.com is another one with great books and bulk herbs for sale.

The great thing about changing your diet and eating more of a vegetarian diet is that tastebuds will adjust and the sugar cravings will become less intense and more managable. Colonics can also speed up the detoxing when switching gears and also will help with hormone imbalances, and mental clarity amongst other things.

The more info we can share the better!

Keep up the great work girls! After all, you are Daughters of the King and you are beautiful!

  11. Oops correction on the one website. It is Bulkherbstore.com not bulkfoodstore.com. sorry…my bad..!!

I don’t know if you’re allowed to tell people in the usa that heart disease is ALWAYS after years of vitamin c deficiency and
that this was proven and known by medicoes before 1950
    and
that this has been not taught to doctors nor the public since shortly after 1950 because the druglords forbid ti !!!

  13. Regarding osteoporosis, I heard a lot of good things about Vitamin K2. It is said to help prevent coronary heart disease and osteoporosis by making sure calcium is deposited into our bones and not our soft tissues. I’m considering supplementation myself and have been researching about this nutrient.

help eliminating em or es ah
is simple and free. (help is free, the item costs $7 to $21 at the store for 2 weeks supply)… it is totally wrong that docs charge over $1300.

I just got to thinkin (hurts! 🙂 don’t it) that
my previous comment might not be as clear as I thought it would be….
    ..
so, here goes — realize that the amaFDAwhoREPdem do not allow nor agree nor permit this info willingly….
    c. nut oil from walmart only costs $7 or so.
it by itself does and can and will
wipe out mrsa infection internal and externally.
    and
    staph infections,
    and
    strep infections,
    and
    all known viral infections,
    and
    all known bacterial infections
    and
all known fungal infections (toe nails etc etc)
    as
well as killing mold and mildew too.
    the
scientific and medical PROOF is on the websites
    from
india, a sad sad sad third world countrie
    with lots of peple,
where the scientists and doctors are ALLOWED to
publish the truth(respecting c. oil, not other things necessarily)….
    ….
looking it up online is one of the joys of life
    still for now permitted
and it will save you the reader thousands of dollars if you find out now while you can.
