Hi Robin,
Yep, we also "hybrid homeschool." I like that term much better than what I have been using, which is, "we are really weird," lol. My oldest takes five classes this year at Grace Academy. Each classes meets two days a week fro about 50 minutes, so she gets out of school at 10:30 on Mon/Wed and 11:30 Tues/Thurs, Before this year, we her taking all of her classes on Tue/Thur, and then homeschooled the other three days. This year, the classes just didn't work out so we could do that. I love the fact that she can take math with a seasoned math professional at a class ratio of one teacher to six students. While she does complain a wee bit about all the focused attention in this subject, her math skills have dramatically improved this year.

For fall 2011, our homeschool experience will again be changing. We decided to let our young 5 go to our church's awesome TK program this year, so she will be turning six and starting kindergarten first grade. Also, my 4 1/2 year old will be ready to start kindergarten (and I will have a 2-year-old). As I am getting more confident in my homeschool teaching abilities, it is becoming easier for me to react and change based on the needs of our family at each period of time. It also helps to have an uber-supportive, loving hubby.

We've done Classical Conversations, and a local fine arts program. There are so many options out there right now...it is a great time to be a homeschooler!!

All the Best,
The Taylors

Thank you for all your great ideas and helpful info. I love the term hybrid-homeschooling. We plan to do this in the coming year, personally and for another family. We have an added twist! I will be hs my 3rd and 5th grader each morning, then 3 times a week in the afternoon they will attend a private christian school to supplement what we are doing. The twist: we will be adding to our classroom via "skype" a 2nd grader and 9th grader 2-3 times a week! I will be distance-homeschooling the other two students. I guess they are hybrid-hs with me :-)Not sure what that classifies as - but I am excited about the new challenge God is giving me
I am glad to see that I am not the only one doing this! thanks again!

Hi Robin,
Hehee, hahaw love it- hybrid homeschooling! Wow, can't believe that one of your dd's is teaching her brothers! Golden!

I have not been hsing nowhere near as long as you but I have been going strong at it for 13 years now (of course parenting my *bonus son* since we got married when I was 18!

I am looking at enrolling my [nearly 15yo] ds into a college for the subject of English in semester 2... so that he can become accustomed to it and possibly enrol there for more subjects next year. This involves him doing his English lessons online and on the phone so for me it is great as he's still at home. However, my youngest is 13yo so I only have a few years left... so I guess one could say that we are hybrid hsing too!

Love your posts sister! I have learned more from you over the last 10 years than anyone else in 'homeschool world'. Thank you!

I sure wasn't one gasping in shock! I have always wondered how you did it with your health problems and running a business. Wish we had something like this in our area. This year with some health issues I have often thought about putting my son in school, but can't bring myself to do it. A structure like this would be so much more doable. Best wishes for your recovery! :)

Robin, Thank you so much for this post. You could also add that single mothers hybrid homeschool. I am currently homeschooling as a single mother and attend part time college courses (trying for LPN). I also work part time. I have 3 kids and hs the younger 2 (my oldest son is 17 yrs. old and attends the local ps). So I've been in prayer about what to do next year because I'll be in school full time then (required for the LPN). My dd will be in 9th grade and ds in 4th grade. This hybrid idea sounds WONDERFUL, not to mention necessary in my case. I don't want to have the type of hs where my kids are left to fend for themselves. Almost all the hs families I know are such that the dad works and the mom stays home in this huge and beautiful house with her 3-10 kids. Of course, they live on a farm and all 10 kids are polite. Well, we sorta feel like the square peg in the hs community. So yes, I want to check out your daughter's online school. It sounds perfect! I think me praying for wisdom has been answered through your posts.

Robin,
I'm so thankful to the Lord that He has provided for you out of His abundance. I think hybrid homeschooling is a good name for a great concept.
For years we have felt pressure to enroll our older children in the Christian high school. There are very few who homeschool their children all the way through or past eighth grade in our area. But I never felt comfortable with not being in control of my children's entire curriculum.
Last fall, instead, I enrolled my oldest in one college Chemistry course. This semester she is taking Anatomy/Physiology. These are her main courses for her senior year and she is doing wonderfully.
At the same time our local homeschool network worked with this same college to create homeschool enrichment courses. So, once a week I take my 8 and 12 year old for computer class. I'd like to enroll them in Spanish class, as well. They are also offering art, algebra, Latin and the list will grow. Turnout has been high.
What a blessing!
As older Moms, we can spot behavioral problems that might come up and we can help younger Moms in those environments in the process. Also, these changes have sparked much dialogue in our home!
The Lord bless your health with strength!
Love in Him, Joni

That is fantastic, Robin. I love that there is never a one size fits all. This is what works right for this season of your life. Praise God for always being so faithful.

Robin, I always love reading your blog and glean such wisdom (from those 25 years of experience) that I have an award for you on my blog.
