Erev Yom Kippur

Erev Yom KippurTonight at dusk is the beginning of Yom Kippur. The proper greeting for this holiday is, “May you have an easy fast.” Today is known as Erev Yom Kippur, representing a person’s last opportunity to seek forgiveness from other people before Yom Kippur begins.

In the Bible, Yom Kippur bears three names: the Day of Atonement, the Day of Judgment, and the Sabbath of Sabbaths. This is a holy day of the Lord that remains “a statute forever.”  This day pictures the transference of sin. It is a time of fasting, cleansing, and reflection which is to be observed once a year. (Lev. 23:26-32). Believers do not fast to obtain forgiveness, but there are benefits to fasting. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in His blood.  Jesus’ death surpasses and replaces the atonement ritual of the Jewish Temple. Let us make every effort to be reconciled to one another today.

I’m having a minor hospital procedure tomorrow morning so I have to fast starting this evening anyway (some timing, eh?). May you have an easy fast.
