His Eye is on the Sparrow

Jesus taught lessons with items from Creation. Light, salt, lilies, seeds, sparrows, all take on new significance. Bread and wine take on new significance because he made them symbols of his death.

Prevent Anger, Resentment, and Bitterness 70X7

“Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”  Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:21,22).
The foundation of Christianity is a based on forgiveness. As [...]

Flowers Without Roots Die

My daughter, Regina brought me a beautiful vase of flowers while I was in the hospital last month.
I brought them home and they brightened my kitchen with cheer for two weeks before they died–then they dried out, got  ugly and produced a nasty stench.
We all know cut flowers die because they are cut off from [...]

My Birthday Gift From God

Today is my birthday.
Last night was Prayer Meeting at church. I couldn’t get my mind off family problems (estranged from two adult children).
I sniffled through the prayers and wiped away tears quickly before anyone raised their head from praying to catch me crying. After the service I scurried to the bathroom to fix my make [...]

Caught In The Do-Dos

The Businessman and the Begger

Two men approached Jesus on his last journey to Jerusalem–a businessman and a beggar.
The first was a righteous man who had meticulously kept the law all of his life. He only wanted to ensure that his efforts would be enough to secure him eternal life. Tragically, he went away deeply grieved [...]

God Uses Everything, Even Red Ants

Near Extinct Blue Butterflies

I love butterflies. They are God’s flying flowers.
The blue butterflies on the top of this blog are not just pretty. They are a reminder to me that God uses everything. The insect world declares the glory of God.
Jesus created the earth and all that is in it. His universe is remarkable [...]

Lessons from Peter

If I walked on water with Jesus you better believe I would be blogging about it within the hour. I would immediately be thinking how could put it into 140 characters for a Tweet on Twitter.
But Peter never mentions this or the other miracles he was involved with in his epistles! What a lesson in [...]

If I Have Diplomas and Not Love, I am Nothing

If I have the language ever so perfectly and speak like a pundit and have not love that grips the heart, I am nothing.
If I have decorations and diplomas and am proficient in up-to-date methods and have not the touch of understanding love, I am nothing.
If I am able to worst my opponents in argument [...]

Having Sight But No Vision

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”–Hellen Keller

Faith is about taking first steps toward doing God’s will, even when it seems very much impossible. Is that the kind of faith we show? Do we confess Jesus with out feet?

The Desensitization Boxes

Has your child seen an autopsy?
Professor Masserman created experiments with cats that made them “neurotic” by giving them electric shocks in a certain box.  Soon the cats acted anxious whenever they were put in the box. In the second part of the experiment, Masserman observed that the cats lost their “neurosis” if they were [...]

Walking in the Light

Late one night, our goats got out of the barn. I was a wakened by their barking protectors, our Great Pyrenees dogs.

I ventured out into the darkness. in my PJs. I found the four animals behind the barn (very dark behind the barn) and started the roundup. I did not see a three foot steel corner part of a fence. I fell into and over it and proceeded to roll.

My accident occurred becasue I was walking in the dark. If I was walking in the light, I would have seen the obstacle and avoided it, the pain, and aggravation that followed.

A Wisdom Parable

Once upon a time there was a village far away in a remote location, which had experienced a hard year of severe weather. A group of missionaries worried that the villagers’ crude huts would not be able to withstand the strong weather any longer. The missionaries wanted to help by taking supplies to the village, [...]

Changing Seasons & Spiritual Encouragement

We are going through a lot of changes. As a result, you may not see me here as often. I’ll be writing as the Lord leads.

The Battle of Good and Evil

There are two trees in the Garden of Eden—the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the Tree of Life. When Adam and Eve ate from the poison tree they infected mankind. Before eating they did not even realize they were naked—their focus was on God. The knowledge of good and evil distracts us [...]

Spiritual Lesson from a Run-Away Horse

I have a mental defect. I don’t do left and right very well. I cannot make a two-sided copy of a document on a copy machine to save my life.

Fruit Comes After the Storm

How do your children see you responding to life’s trials? Do you feel sorry for yourself and get depressed? Do you cast blame and grow bitter and angry? Or do you turn to the our Father and ask, “What is Your purpose in this?”
Our responses to difficulties are powerful lessons not written on a [...]

Allowing God to Chart Your Course

This week I am teaching Outrigger Island Vacation Bible School . Based on Psalm 86:11, the goal of this tropical adventure theme is to help kids develop faith in God and His Word.
Here are my boys and others in their class singing about being unshakable in a world of shifting sands.

The Woman with the Issue of Blood

The woman with an issue of blood is one of the most heartrending of all Bible stories.
My recent hemorrhage, blood transfusions, and weekly blood infusions have brought this story close to home.
Blood loss is but one of many things that leave us physically and spiritually weak frail, anemic, haggard, overwhelmed, and fragile. Heartbreak, unforgiveness, bitterness, [...]

View from the Back of an Ambulance

Is there anything more sobering than an hour ride in an ambulance with flashing lights and screaming sirens?
Yes, there is. When the paramedic in the back of the ambulance takes your BP and says to the ambulance driver, “You better speed it up” SPEED IT UP? Yep, that is even more sobering.
Rejoice: This Week Has [...]

Spiritual Journey: Reaching the Promised Land

In the Heart of Wisdom Teaching Approach I compare the homeschool journey to the Exodus from Egypt (leaving public school) traveling in the desert, and seeking the Promised Land. The Passover story and journey to the Promised Land is a meaty symbol of our spiritual journey and growth. The Israelites were saved from Egypt but not all entered the Promised Land–only their children and a few men of faith entered. Likewise, in our spiritual journey we can be saved but fall short of arriving in the promised land.

You may have a spiritual blockage obstructing the flow of the Holy Spirit…

Be the Branch

If you want to produce fruit remember your job is to be the branch.
The branch is a growth from the main stem or root of a plant. Various Hebrew words are translated as branch or shoot. The most common one can be defined as any sprout of vegetation (Gen. 19:25; Ezek. 16:7; Ps. 85:11).

Sometimes we [...]
