In Matthew 20:28 Jesus said, [I ] give [my] life as a ransom for many...
Our
month-old grandson is so precious, truly a gift to behold. His mother
takes such good care of him, feeding and changing him when he cries,
and cradling him lovingly in her arms. His little waaa waaa when he is
hungry comes regularly-about every four hours. As he nurses, she sings
to him or just sits and holds him, looking into the wonder of the
miracle in her arms.
His
older brother, now 16 months, has been through that stage. He
progressed from nursing, to drinking formula, to mushy and awful
looking stuff in a baby jar, to people food. We began to feed him with
a spoon, and now he wants to pick his food up in his little hands and
do it himself. It won't be long before he will start to learn how to
use utensils.
Each
step of this eating procedure is in accordance with the age of the
child. God, of course, is available to us and wants us to feed at His
table regularly, no matter if we are drinking milk or consuming a heavy
meal.
The
way we feed our spiritual bodies is not unlike the manner in which we
feed our physical bodies. When we are babies in the Lord, it is
wonderful to be fed spiritual milk-something easy for us to digest-and
hopefully given to us by someone who can nurture us as we begin to
grow. Pretty soon we can be spoon fed, where someone tells us what the
Bible says and tells us how and where to look for important passages.
But the time comes when we must pick up the spiritual food for
ourselves, delving into God's Word, reading and meditating regularly.
Next we are ready for the "meat and potatoes"-a hearty meal of insights
which is not always easy to digest. We may mull over a passage,
chapter, or even an entire book (Job was a difficult one for me), until
God settles our questions or allows us to put them on the back burner.
A
wonderful delight along the way is dessert. No matter the stage of our
spiritual nourishment, we can be blessed with wonderful insights
pertaining to our own particular circumstances. When something from His
Word gives you peace or understanding applied to your own personal
life, I call that dessert!

Growth
cannot happen if there is no nourishment-either in the physical or
spiritual realm. Let's start where we are today, and forge ahead to the
next level of eating pleasure-in the holy Word of God. May He bless you
as you are obedient in this discipline.
The
greatest gift we can give our children is faith in God, and wings to
soar. As does a bird eventually fly from its nest, so too will our
little ones leave home when it is time to explore the world on their
own. No longer will they be tiny sparrows, but, with the right
upbringing, hopefully they will exit the nest with the wings of an
eagle; strong and able.
It
is necessary to prepare children for how to fully deal with all the
responsibilities of the outside world, but is more important that this
foundation stems from a righteous source-God.
